Cavies (guinea pigs) are actually South American in origin, so the "Guinea" in guinea pig is a bit of a misnomer. Cavies are an important food source in that particular part of the world - and in some cases black guinea pigs are used for divination. Here in North America where G-Cam is located, they are domesticated companion animals. The only religious purpose they serve in this house is related to the profanities uttered during 7:00 AM wake-up shriekfests. Read more interesting historical stuff here.
Individual topic pages have more information - here are the Cavy Cliff Notes:
- Cavies are active day and night in between sleep cycles. Ours tend to sleep an average of two hours and then wake, eat, drink, groom, and politik.
- Cavies are social animals and are designed by nature to live in herds. They must be kept in multiple numbers. A pair at the absolute minimum.
- Cavies have certain food requirements, and need foods rich in vitamin C.
- Cavies require assistance from their keepers for tasks such as haircuts, nail trimming, and ear cleaning.
- Elderly cavies have special needs on top of the regular needs.
- Cavies have special housing requirements.
- Cavies will enthusiastically inform their caretakers of any unmet needs.
